Why the Power Behaves the Way It Does Out Here
If you transferred in from somewhere greener, the outages here will feel different. This is high, open country, and the weather that takes power down is usually the same weather that makes losing it expensive. Wet spring snow and hard wind do most of the damage, and they arrive in the cold months, when an unheated house has the least margin. Your job is not to predict them. It is to decide what happens in your house when one lands.
Open Country Changes the Failure Mode
People arriving at F.E. Warren from a coastal or a wooded assignment usually expect outages to work the way they did there: a storm rolls through, something falls on a line, the lights flicker back within the hour. The pattern out here is not that.
Start with the wind. There is very little to break it on this side of the state, so it runs hard and it runs for stretches rather than in gusts attached to a passing storm. Wind alone brings things down onto lines. Combine it with wet snow, which is the spring specialty here, and you get conductors carrying weight they were not carrying an hour earlier, plus limbs loaded past what they hold.
The timing is the part that actually costs people money. The events most likely to take power down arrive in the cold months. That is exactly when losing power is most expensive, because a house without heat has a much shorter fuse than a house without air conditioning. Elsewhere an outage is a nuisance. What We Do Not Know, and Will Not Pretend To
We are an electrician, not the utility. Everything on your side of the meter is ours. Everything on the other side of it, the poles, the lines, the transformers and the crews who fix them, belongs to the utility that owns the distribution line serving your property.
So we are not going to tell you how long a restoration takes, or promise a response time, or claim to know why one street came back before another. We do not have that information and neither does anybody quoting you an average. What we can tell you is what happens inside your house when the power stops and when it comes back, because that part is genuinely ours.
The call I dread is somebody running a generator through an extension cord into the house, or worse, backfeeding a dryer outlet. That last one energizes the line outside and there are crews out there working on it. If you own a portable unit, let me put in a proper inlet and interlock. That is a small job and it is the difference between a tool and a hazard.
The Part That Is Actually Yours
Three things inside a house decide how an outage goes, and all three are worth sorting out before one.
The first is heat. If the furnace stops and nobody is home, pipes in an exterior wall can freeze within hours. That is the failure worth spending money to avoid, and it is why the backup power conversation around here starts with heat rather than with comfort. If your house sits empty during a deployment or a long TDY, that is a different problem than an outage while you are sitting in the living room, and we wrote about it separately.
The second is what happens when the power returns. Everything in the house restarts at once, and a service that was already at its limit does not enjoy that. The third is surge. Restoration and nearby faults are hard on electronics, and a house full of things with circuit boards in them has more exposure than a house from the era most of these neighborhoods were wired in. Protection at the panel is ordinary work and it is the kind of thing worth doing while somebody is already there for something else.
Portable, Standby, or Neither
A portable generator is the cheap answer and it works, with two conditions. It needs a properly installed inlet and interlock so nothing backfeeds the line outside, and it needs somebody home to start it. That second condition is the one that disqualifies it for a lot of households here, because the whole reason to worry is the stretch when nobody is home.
A standby unit with an automatic transfer switch removes the person from the equation. It senses the outage, starts, and moves the protected circuits over with the house empty. If you rent, this decision belongs to the owner, since a permanently installed unit is an improvement to their property.
And neither is a legitimate answer. If somebody is reliably home, if the house is well insulated, and if you are honestly not that bothered, a couple of good lanterns and a plan is a reasonable position. We will tell you that rather than sell you something, which is a boring thing for a contractor to say and happens to be true.
What Solar Does Not Do
Worth saying plainly, because it surprises people: a rooftop array does not keep your lights on during an outage. A grid tied system shuts down with the grid, by design, so nobody backfeeds a line a crew is working on. Storage changes that for a limited window. A standby generator covers an outage of any length. Those are three different products solving three different problems, and the ordering matters if what you actually care about is heat in an empty house.

How long do outages last around here?
We are not the utility and we will not guess at that. Restoration belongs to the utility that owns the distribution line serving your property, and anybody quoting you an average is making it up. Can I just run a portable generator into the house?
Only through a properly installed inlet and interlock. Running cords through a window is bad enough, and backfeeding through a dryer outlet energizes the line outside where crews are working. The inlet and interlock is a small job and it is the difference between a useful tool and a genuine hazard.
