How long does a service upgrade typically take?

From signed contract to energized new service, most service upgrades run six to sixteen weeks. Utility transformer work and equipment lead times drive the schedule. The actual cutover window is typically a single weekend or planned shutdown, eight to twenty-four hours of facility outage.

Do you handle the utility coordination, or do I?

We handle all utility coordination including service application, single-line diagram submittal, transformer scheduling, and cutover-day coordination with Rocky Mountain Power. You may need to sign the utility service agreement, but the technical paperwork and scheduling is on us. We also track the transformer lead time, which is often the longest pole in the whole project, and keep you posted on it.

What is the cost of a 240V to 480V conversion?

Costs vary widely based on existing service size, distance from the utility transformer, and the scope of interior distribution changes required. The largest single variable is usually the utility side: whether Rocky Mountain Power can serve you from existing infrastructure or has to set a new transformer and extend primary to your site. After that it is the switchgear rating and lead time, the length of the feeder run, whether the conversion can be staged around production or needs a full shutdown, and how much interior distribution has to change to accept the new voltage. Why convert to 480V if 240V already runs my equipment?

Because current is what costs you copper and heat. At 480 volts the same horsepower draws roughly half the amps, so feeders get smaller, voltage drop over a long run stops being a problem, and motors run cooler and last longer. If you are adding large motor loads, a big compressor, welders, or a production line, the 240-volt service is usually the thing that caps how much you can install. Most industrial equipment is built for 480 three-phase anyway, so you stop paying for step-up transformers and buck-boost workarounds. The catch is that any remaining 240-volt and 120-volt equipment needs a transformer to serve it, and we account for that in the design rather than discovering it at cutover.

Will a service upgrade reduce my utility bill?

Often yes, primarily through demand charge reduction and access to more favorable utility rate schedules at higher service capacities. Some facilities also unlock primary-metering rates that meaningfully reduce per-kWh charges. We can model expected savings during the proposal phase.

Can you upgrade service while keeping production running?

For most facilities, yes, with a planned outage window. We pre-install the new service equipment alongside the existing service, run temporary feeders if needed, and execute the cutover during a planned shutdown. Continuous-process facilities sometimes require more elaborate temporary power schemes; we develop those plans during engineering.
