PLC Wiring Expertise

Control Wiring That Will Not Haunt Your Maintenance Team

Moonlight Electric Solutions provides PLC and automation wiring services for industrial facilities throughout Cheyenne and southeastern Wyoming. We install control panels, terminate field wiring to PLC racks, hook up instruments and final control elements, and document every conductor for future commissioning and service work.

Most plants we visit have at least one panel where the original wiring discipline broke down: unlabeled conductors, missing ferrules, undocumented changes. Troubleshooting that panel during a production stoppage costs hours. We approach every install as if we were the next person to open the panel, because we often are.

A PLC panel is read-only when it is built right. Open the door, follow a wire from terminal to terminal without confusion, and commissioning becomes a verification exercise instead of a discovery exercise.

Cheyenne and the surrounding region host a growing automation footprint: process control in oil and gas, water and wastewater treatment, agricultural processing, and discrete manufacturing. We serve plant engineers, maintenance directors, and the integrators they partner with across Laramie County and northern Colorado.

Our PLC and automation work covers new control panel builds, panel modifications and additions, field wiring runs from PLC to instruments and final control elements, motor and VFD control wiring, and complete documentation packages. We work from your integrator landing diagrams or develop point-to-point schedules in coordination with your controls engineer.

Clean control wiring is a habit Isaac brought back from federal automation work, where a single mislabeled conductor in a control panel could stop a commissioning sign-off cold. The standard there was simple: every wire numbered at both ends, every shield landed and noted, every signal type kept separated so analog instrument runs do not pick up noise off the power wiring. We build that way on every Cheyenne panel. It costs a little more time at the bench and saves your maintenance team hours every time a loop has to be traced or an integrator needs to verify a point. The plants that have lived through a 2 a.m. troubleshoot in a panel built the other way understand exactly why that matters.

03

Instrument Hookup

Process instrument wiring including 4-20mA loops, RTDs, thermocouples, flow meters, and pressure transmitters. Loop checks performed during commissioning.

04

Network Cabling

Industrial Ethernet, EtherNet/IP, ProfiNet, and Modbus TCP cabling between PLC, drives, HMI, and remote I/O. Shielded cable with proper grounding for noise immunity.

05

Panel Modifications

Adding I/O cards, expanding terminal strips, integrating new instruments, and updating drawings to match field reality. Disciplined change documentation.

06

Commissioning Support

Loop check support, point-to-point verification, and field troubleshooting during integrator commissioning. We carry diagnostic tools and PLC programming software for the major platforms.

Installation Process

How PLC Wiring Projects Work

01

Drawing Review and Field Survey

We review the integrator landing diagrams, panel drawings, and instrument list. We walk the field route to identify conduit paths, mounting locations, and any field conditions that affect the design.

02

Material Procurement and Pre-Fabrication

We procure cable, conductors, terminal blocks, and labeling materials. Where possible, we pre-fabricate panel assemblies and pre-cut cable runs off-site to compress field installation time.

03

Field Installation and Termination

Our electricians install conduit, pull conductors, and terminate to specification. Every conductor is ferruled, every terminal block is labeled per the drawing, and every panel door is sealed against plant dust and condensation.

04

Loop Checks and Documentation

We perform point-to-point continuity checks, loop checks on every analog signal, and deliver an as-built drawing package marked up to reflect any field deviations from the original design.

Frequently Asked Questions

PLC & Automation Wiring FAQs

Do you program the PLC, or just install the wiring?

We focus on the electrical installation: panel build, field wiring, terminations, and loop checks. PLC programming is typically performed by your in-house controls engineer or third-party integrator. We coordinate closely with whoever holds the program and provide field support during commissioning.

Which PLC platforms do you wire for?

We have wired control systems built around Allen-Bradley ControlLogix and CompactLogix, Siemens S7, Modicon (Schneider), and smaller systems from Automation Direct and Beckhoff. Most plants in our region run Allen-Bradley, but we are platform-agnostic on the wiring side.

Do you build UL-listed panels?

Yes. For panels destined for industrial installations where UL listing is required by your AHJ or insurance carrier, we partner with a UL-listed panel shop for the panel build itself, and handle the field wiring, conduit, and instrument hookup ourselves.

Can you work alongside our existing integrator?

Absolutely. We frequently serve as the electrical contractor on projects where the controls integrator handles the programming and HMI development. We coordinate on landing diagrams, schedule field work around their commissioning visits, and provide field support during startup.

How do you handle drawing changes during construction?

Every field change is captured on a marked-up drawing in the field, then transferred to the master drawing set during weekly project reviews. The final as-built package reflects every approved change so future maintenance and modification work has accurate documentation.

Can you troubleshoot existing PLC and instrument wiring problems?

Yes. We troubleshoot wiring faults, instrument loop problems, and panel issues using PLC diagnostic data, loop calibrators, and continuity testing. Most calls are resolved on the first visit with the right diagnostic discipline. Call (307) 757-5553 to schedule a service visit.

How do you keep instrument signals clean from electrical noise?

By separating signal types and grounding shields the right way. We route low-level analog instrument wiring away from motor and power conductors, land cable shields at a single point so they do not form a ground loop, and use twisted, shielded pair where the signal calls for it. On a plant floor full of VFDs and large motors, that discipline is the difference between a stable 4 to 20 mA loop and a reading that drifts every time a motor starts. We build it in from the panel out.
