Winter Loads That Quietly Overload a Rural Wyoming Service

The calls change in November. Through the warm months I mostly hear about remodels, a shop circuit, a hot tub going in. Then the first hard cold sits down over Laramie County and the phone starts ringing about panels that worked fine for years and will not carry the place anymore. Nothing was added. Nobody rewired anything. What changed is that a rural property in Wyoming picks up a whole second electrical system every winter, one appliance at a time, and almost nobody counts it. Out past Pine Bluffs and Burns and Carpenter, where the drop runs a long way from the pole, that seasonal load is the difference between a comfortable service and one running at the edge of what it was built for.

The Load You Add Without Deciding To

A stock tank heater is a simple thing, and that is exactly why it multiplies. One goes in the horse tank in October. By December there is a second one in the tank by the loafing shed, heat tape on the hydrant line, another run on the pipe in the well house, a bucket heater in the shop sink. Every one of those is a resistance load, which means it pulls its full rated current the entire time it is switched on, and in a real cold snap they are on nearly all the time. By February I regularly find four or five of them landing on one 20 amp circuit somebody ran to the barn years ago for a light and a couple of outlets. That circuit is not failing. It is doing arithmetic.

The Well Pump Is the Load Nobody Counts

The pump is easy to forget because it is out of sight and it does not run continuously. It also draws several times its running current for the first moment of every start, and cold makes that worse. The motor is stiffer, the water is colder, and the pump takes a beat longer to come up to speed, so the inrush lasts longer than it does in June. On a service already carrying tank heaters and shop heat, a pump start on a February morning is what pushes the whole thing over. If your lights blink every time the pressure tank calls, that is the pump telling you the service is tight.

Two Block Heaters on One Yard Outlet

Then there is the yard outlet. A truck block heater and a tractor block heater on the same duplex by the shop door, one of them through an extension cord, are a load that would look reasonable if either ran alone. Together, on a circuit that also feeds the yard light and a trickle charger, they run for hours before dawn, the same hours the tank heaters work hardest and the furnace cycles most. I see that outlet cooked more often than any other. The face is discolored, the cord end has gone soft, and it holds right up until the coldest morning of the year, which is the morning you needed the tractor.

Winter does not break panels. Winter reveals them. Everything I find in January was already there in July, sitting under a load light enough to hide it. That is why I would rather walk a place in the fall than get called out at ten below with stock to water.

A Heated Shop Is a Second House

A shop with a unit heater in it is a second house as far as your service is concerned. Electric unit heaters are large continuous loads by design. Add a compressor cycling on its own schedule, a welder used in bursts, and lights across the whole ceiling, and the shop can pull more in January than the residence does. What makes it risky is that the shop usually got its power added later, on a feeder sized for what the building did the year it went up rather than what it does now. The building grew into a workspace. The wire feeding it never did.

Space Heaters in Rooms Never Wired for Them

Inside the house the same thing happens quietly. A back bedroom over a crawlspace never warms up, so a space heater goes in. Another one lands under the desk in the office. A third lives in the bathroom on cold mornings. General purpose bedroom circuits were sized for lamps and a television, and they usually serve several rooms at once. One 1,500 watt heater is most of what that circuit can safely carry all day. Two on the same circuit, plus a hair dryer, and the breaker trips. That trip is not a nuisance. It is the only device in the house that knows the wire behind the wall is getting hot.

The Freezer in the Unheated Outbuilding

Freezers in a cold barn are the sleeper. People assume they barely run out there. What often happens instead is the ambient swings hard, the door gets opened while somebody loads beef, and the compressor works in a space where the condenser is fighting drafts and dust. It cycles more, not less, and it does it on the same barn circuit as the heat tape.

When the Lights Dim and Nothing Trips

Here is the part that fools people, because it does not look like an overload at all. When lights dim across one whole side of the house, or lamps in one room brighten while another room goes dull, the problem is usually a connection rather than capacity. A lug that was never torqued correctly. A neutral corroded where the drop lands. A splice at a weatherhead that has flexed in Wyoming wind for twenty years. Heavy winter load is simply what exposes it. Current through a loose connection makes heat, heat makes the joint worse, and the voltage on that leg starts to wander. Nothing trips, because a breaker watches current, not connection quality. Flicker under load is the symptom I take most seriously on a rural service, and the one people wait longest to call about.

A Breaker Working Versus a Breaker Worn Out

There is a real difference between a breaker doing its job and one that has quit. A breaker that trips under a load you can name, the moment you plugged in the second heater, is a healthy device protecting the wire behind it. Shut something off, reset it once, and it holds. A breaker reset a hundred times over three winters is a different animal. Those internals are mechanical and thermal, and they wear. Eventually you get one that will not stay in at all, or worse, one that stays in when it should not. If a breaker feels warm to the back of your hand, buzzes, will not reset cleanly, or trips with nothing unusual running, stop resetting it. And the answer is never a larger breaker on the same wire. That does not remove the overload. It removes the thing that was protecting you from it.

Count the Load Instead of Guessing at It

The way out of guessing is a load calculation, and it is not exotic. We walk the property and write down what is actually there: square footage and fixed appliances, the pump and its motor data, every heater in the barn and the shop, the block heater outlet, dryer, range, the shop feeder and everything landing on it. Then it gets run against the code method rather than a feeling. Sometimes a 200 amp service is fine and the whole problem is three overloaded branch circuits. Sometimes a 100 amp service on a place that has added a shop, a well, and a heated tack room is genuinely out of room, and no amount of rearranging fixes that.

Sequencing the Fix When the Answer Is at the Meter

When the calculation comes back over, sequence matters, because nobody does everything in one week in January. Safety comes first: a loose lug, an overheated conductor, or a damaged breaker gets handled immediately no matter what follows. Then we separate loads that never should have shared a circuit, since dedicated runs for the barn heaters and a proper yard outlet often buy back enough headroom to finish the season. Why does my panel only give me trouble in winter?

Because winter is when the property carries the most load. Tank heaters, heat tape, block heaters, shop heat, and space heaters all run at once, most of them for hours at a stretch. Nothing broke in November. The panel was already near its limit, and seasonal load walks it over the line.

My lights dim when the well pump starts. Is that an overload?

Sometimes, but more often it is a connection problem. A loose lug, a corroded neutral, or a tired splice at the weatherhead all show up as dimming and flicker under heavy load while never tripping a breaker, because breakers watch current and not connection quality. It is worth looking at soon rather than in spring.

Is it safe to keep resetting a breaker that trips?

Once, after you shut something off, is normal. Repeatedly is not. Breakers wear out mechanically and thermally, and one that has been reset through three winters may refuse to hold, or hold when it should not. If it feels warm, buzzes, or trips with nothing unusual running, leave it off and have it looked at.

Can I put in a bigger breaker to stop the tripping?

No. The breaker is sized to protect the wire behind it, not the appliance in front of it. Putting a larger one on the same conductor leaves the wire carrying more current than it was rated for, and that heat is inside a wall where nobody sees it. The fix is a properly sized circuit.

Do I need more circuits or a bigger service?

The load calculation answers that. Plenty of properties have adequate service capacity and three badly overloaded branch circuits, which is a much smaller job. Can this wait until spring?

Overloaded circuits, worn breakers, dimming, and warm panel parts should not wait. Planned upgrades are different. If the service is undersized but stable, scheduling the work in fall means the outage lands on a mild day instead of a cold snap with livestock depending on heated water.
